Your AI investing agent no longer needs your password
A new class of startups is letting AI agents act inside the brokerage accounts investors already own, through permissioned APIs rather than shared logins.

When Robinhood opened its platform to AI agents in May, it gave a mainstream audience a glimpse of a future in which software, not people, places many retail trades. Most investors, though, don't keep all their money at one broker. They hold a 401(k) at one firm, a brokerage account at another and perhaps a Roth IRA at a third. For a personal AI agent to be useful, it has to work across all of them.
That's the bet behind Volaren, a Y Combinator Fall 2026 startup building a personal investing agent. Rather than asking users to move money or hand over passwords, Volaren connects to the accounts they already have. Volaren has joined Y Combinator's Fall 2026 batch and raised ~$1M in pre-seed funding, with participation from Afore Capital and the Andreessen Horowitz scout fund via Sebastian Tan.
“Our users want an agent that works with the accounts they already have,” said Martin Pestana, Volaren's co-founder. “Finatic lets us connect to their brokers without ever touching their logins, so we can focus on building the agent.”
The plumbing is a fast-growing corner of fintech. Finatic, a US-based brokerage API, gives apps one interface to read balances and positions and to place trades across 534 financial institutions. The company says usage is growing 100% month over month, driven largely by AI-agent developers.
“Every AI investing product hits the same wall: the money is spread across dozens of brokers, and each one works differently,” said Mathias Reippuert, Finatic's founder. “We turn that into a single connection the user authorizes and can revoke at any time. The agent never sees a password.”
Why logins are the fault line
The question of how agents get into accounts has become urgent. At Schwab's IMPACT conference in October, CEO Rick Wurster said the firm was blocking AI agents that try to log in on clients' behalf, as many as 30 to 50 attempts a week from a single agent. He also said Schwab allows LLMs to connect when it controls the authentication experience. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Wurster said agents should trade only if users give them the “rules of the road.”
Regulators are paying attention too. FINRA's 2026 Annual Regulatory Oversight Report flagged the risk of AI agents acting autonomously without human validation and approval. In June, House Financial Services Democrats led by Reps. Bill Foster and Brad Sherman sent SEC Chairman Paul Atkins 13 questions about agentic trading.
Permissioned API connections are the industry's answer. The user approves access at the broker, the app receives a token instead of credentials, and access can be limited or cut off. Robinhood took a similar approach for its own agents, confining them to a separately funded account.
What an agent actually does
For Volaren, connectivity is the starting point rather than the product. The company describes its agent as one that “knows why your portfolio moved, suggests your next idea and trades it for you,” available around the clock on the web, in an app or by text message.
The risks remain
AI agents can misread instructions or act on stale data, and every major platform that offers agentic trading makes clear that the customer bears the losses. Analysts recommend starting with small balances, keeping trade approvals on and reviewing activity. Supporters argue that permissioned connections make those safeguards easier to enforce than password sharing ever did.
“The responsible version of agentic investing is one where the user stays in control of access,” Reippuert said. “That's the layer we're building.”
